December 1st 2011

Dear TJ Maxx — I’m sorry I forget about you, but I think my random trips that result in hundreds of dollars crammed into a rickety grey cart make up for my infrequent visits.

Though it’s now December, it still looks decidedly like early Fall here in California. I have yet to see frosty mornings, endless rainy days or the bare bones of winter trees. If these lively piles of vibrant leaves are any indication, I’m thinking it’s just around the corner.

Saturday we celebrated our parent’s 30 year anniversary with a small dinner party at a local restaurant. Together they make one awesome set who have raised two semi-normal healthy adults without driving either of them to a life of meth addiction and Vegas one-night-stands. Bravo parental units, bravo!

No really, they’re pretty great. The dinner was a surprise that I set up with many of our friends and family. My dad caught my nasty cold from the week before and he was feeling a little better than warmed over death. With complete faith and love for his daughters he agreed to still go to dinner with us, having no idea that many more people were there to celebrate. Like a trooper, he stuck it out in high spirits. Good man.

I knew it would be chilly, so I opted for tights and something I could easily toss a blazer over. This top was another find from the thrift store the day I got in my car accident. It’s a bit tight, but I couldn’t pass it up. If you’re anything like me, when it’s just a smidge tight you let it slip and hope you lose a few pounds or that it will be seen as edgy rather than trashy. The fact that there are mesh and satin panels makes this top pretty great no matter what. Oh and the sparkles.

It occured to me that I rarely post pictures of outfits a little less on the special side. Meaning, what I typically wear to run a quick errand or when I’m just not feeling up to wearing heels, a blazer and gobs of jewelry.

I know, it’s hard to believe and even harder for me to share, but I do not in fact look uber (yeah, I said it.) fabulous every day of the week. Actually, I wear a version of what you see here nearly every other day.

I don’t think this is particularly offensive by all means. It’s simple but put together. I would blend into a crowd (not my favorite thing to do, in case you hadn’t noticed.) and yet I could still get away with bumping into an old friend and not being ashamed of what I was wearing.

I got these boots over the summer and starting wearing them faithfully this fall. I was so dissapointed in how quickly they scuffed and dried out and showed wear. I stopped by a little “Mom & Pop” shoe repair shop and 5 minutes later and a good coat of natural oil and these darn boots look brand stinking new. For less than a venti triple shot black and white mocha.

That’s not what I drink at The Bux by the way, that what my pampered princess of a husband drinks. And it does indeed cost nearly 7 dollars. I think.

I was still without a car on Friday, so instead of standing in line freezing our butts off or getting pepper sprayed in Walmart, my mom and I decided to hunt down a vehicle for me. We toted Marni around all day but we finally succumbed to the lure of Kohl’s.

Oddly (or maybe not so odd considering the culprits — my mom and I) we ended the day having bought only things for ourselves. My biggest purchase of the day, a gently used Dodge Durango. I’m aware of the horrible suffering at the pump I’ll be subjected to, but four wheel drive is kind of necessary when you’re moving to The Great Icy Plains.

I have done nearly all of my holiday shopping online so far since Thanksgiving, and I intend to keep it that way. I’m pretty sure the UPS guy will have my address memorized by the end of December.

November 19th, 2011

The very next day after my accident, I decided to get up and get moving. Sure I was a bit sore and now had a decent head cold, but I’m generally unfazed by most things in life and this wasn’t going to stop me.

My mom appointed herself gate keeper and stayed that first night with me. She had errands to run and I needed a few groceries as well so I threw on my newly thrifted jean jacket and a warm scarf.

You see, I actually have a nasty looking wound on the underside of my chin. This was the simplest way I could think to cover it. Nobody I came across that day was the wiser. My lips are also a little bruised and swollen, but you would really have to be staring hard at them to see.

It’s been really biting cold lately, so in addition to this getup, I had some red faux leather gloves as well. Sticking with the color de jour, I treated myself to a new gel manicure in a shiny holiday red. I’ve been feeling better and moving around just fine. I visited my car yesterday in the lot, it’s clear she got the short end of the stick during the scuffle.

I managed to rescue my hat, earrings and other brown glove. In addition, my Marc aviators are repairable after all. The insurance company totaled my car out for far more than I thought I would get, so all is looking well. My final task is to pick up my replacement car, something small and nearly as old as my Honda. She will be greatly missed (I had my car for almost 10 years) but her many miles of service and protection were much appreciated. Thanks for everything, Gigi (yeah, I named my car. I was seventeen.) you’ve been quite the trooper.

I had to include this picture of Marni, who was hanging out during my quick photo shoot. Once I finished, I was checking the camera when she sat down right where I had been standing and gave her best impersonation of a style blogger posing for her outfit photos. Too bad she’s naked.
