Reader Request: Yellow Bridal Shoes

[source]

Did you know, I first started blogging as a runner? Maybe you did if you’ve been a friend and follower of mine since 2009, like the infamous Jen Morgan of Caution: Redhead Running. I’ve been a reader of her blog long before she ran her first (fateful) marathon in Chicago, where she met her soon to be husband.

I can say this with some confidence, the girl has ISSUES with her legs and feet. She’s not really the type to go prancing around in heels, but with a wedding looming next Fall, Jen has come to me with the task of finding a beautiful pair of yellow shoes to wear under her gown on the big day. Judging from her own Pinterest boards, she got a neat color scheme of grey and canary yellow planned out. I love it, it sounds fabulous (please invite me to the wedding, please!).

She requested the heel be under 4” since she wasn’t sure how confidently she could manage walking down the aisle in them. She also wanted to spend less than $100, as she will likely only be wearing them for pictures and the ceremony.

I love the picture I found on Pinterest above, but after some intensive searching I came to the conclusion that they probably are Valentino Couture and over $500. Sad puppy whimper. So I found the next best thing, and coming in with 5 cents to spare and a quarter inch left to shimmy under the bar with, I present: the perfect Cinderella shoe — in yellow.

I know this heel is little too high for our dear Jen, but I have some well-experienced advice for everyone. Although I have lots of crazy heels, I don’t wear them as often as you think. I suffer from pain in the balls of my feet, aches in my lower back and pinching in my toes just like the rest of you. If I know I’m going to be committed to a pair of heels for any given amount of time, I prep myself.

  • Wear the heels around the house, when you’re sitting at the computer and when your making breakfast. If you want to avoid scratches and scuffs, simply cut the toes off a pair of knee highs and cover your foot, leaving the bottom open so you don’t slip.
  • Pick up those cushy gel pads that stick to the inside of the shoe where the ball of your foot goes, Dr Scholls makes a good pair for less than 5 bucks. They really do work.
  • Take them to a shoe repair place, have rubber non-skid soles added and keep in mind that they can also stretch the shoes to fit your toes a bit better.
  • Wear the shoes for increasing amounts of time in the days leading up to the big day, this will ensure that your feet are already used to the pressure of the heels.
  • If you’ll be walking on grass, practice in a pair of similar shoes in a dark color. Your stems will sink into the grass. Free aeration for the lawn, but a bit of a challenge for you. Practice makes perfect!

Now, if it was me walking back down the aisle and I wanted a great yellow shoe, I’d probably choose one of the following. Heck, I want these in my closet NOW. In fact I own the Sam Edelman’s on the left in black velvet, less the peep toes.

Finally, since Jen mentioned she wouldn’t be wearing the fancy shoes all night, I figured a few choices for some comfortable reception shoes were in order. The wedding will be in October in Michigan, and though I bet she wants flip-flops — over my dead body will you ever see me wear nor recommend flip-flops on this blog.

So I picked some cute flats out, including a pair of rain boots. How adorable would it be to lift up that big fluffy dress and see a pair of bright yellow wellies? I mean, if it rains, these $30 ones from Target are a perfect last second save. I think the Marc mousie ones are just plain fun. Wouldn’t it be great to have pictures of those, plus I know her fiance likes quirky little touches like that.
